Re-Constitution - Can These Ashes Rise? by Steven Clark Bradley

This amazing new story came to me while I have been living here in China for the past three months. One morning, I was looking out my window at about 5:00 a.m. and thinking about this nation that has sort of risen from the ashes. Then I thought about so many things I wish i could relive and change about my own existence and the idea came to me that what would we do if we were responsible for someone's greatest disaster in their lives when they were trying to do something so good. That was when Re-Constitution came to my head and it has been living there ever since. You'll love this introduction t the story and the characters are all so vivid and becoming even more so as the story unfolds and reveals itself to me. I am happy to share with you, Re-Constitution - Can These Ashes Rise?

Re-Constitution
Chapter One
Shenyang, The People’s Republic of China
Tuesday, March 17, 2013, 6:21 p.m.
It is the early evening in China on Tuesday, and it is cold and dark and I am peering out the window of my third story apartment with a cigarette in my hand. I can see firsthand that none of this monster totalitarian beast is anything like one reads about China's emergence as a world power. It’s all underground, unknown except to a few like me who are unlucky enough to have found out. In reality, this is just a large totalitarian third-world nation that has fed the world a load of lies and hype.
China is at least 30 years behind America in almost every single thing except in their ability to steal technology and to make it better or more lethal. The people long for freedom but remain passive from fear that their words can land them in prison. I am here to stop them from making the whole world a prison, and America is in the viper’s den helping them. Some of us have died to stop them; one of them is coming back.
His two eyes looked down at his computer screen as he typed the final words to his journal for the night. He read through what he had written. His is entry was short tonight, far shorter than usual, because he was far busier than normal and perhaps these were the last words he’d ever write. I may not be back, but when is that ever guaranteed? He attached his name, Blogger and walked out the door.
Shenyang, The People’s Republic of China
Tuesday, March 17, 2013, 6:32 p.m.
“Where are you?”
“Come on Ruby, don’t give me that bull! You know where I am all the time, even when I don’t want you to, which is almost all the time, except tonight.”
“It’s because I love you.” Ruby replied and chuckled.
The man’s whose voice was on the other side of the line walked out of the campus of the Shenyang Institute of Engineering where he was doubling as a common teacher, though there was nothing common about him or why he was really there. “The only thing you love is food and yourself.”
“That’s not true. I love shoes too. We should not be doing this thing.” Ruby told him.
“One second.”
The operative hit a button on his phone that scrambled the call. He saw the GPS signal that was active on his phone and the satellite uplink that gave Ruby Zhang, his attaché complete visibility of his location at any given moment. He looked forward at the stretch of sidewalk that had small trees lining both sides which made the passage way so narrow that two people could barely pass side by side. He had walked the narrow area and looked to the left and to the right at the bright night lights all lit up illuminating the Chinese symbols glowing from everywhere in the black humid night.
He kept walking straight towards the place that had actually brought him into the People’s Republic of China in the first place. He would not deviate from his path all the way down to his final target, as he had rehearsed so many times in the past month to make sure that the Chinese sign plastered on every storefront that made everywhere look the same to him would not be an impediment. I’m hiding in the open public. He told himself and again everything looked the same.
“She should not have died!” He almost shouted. “She was trying to stop a war! That makes ‘this thing,’ as you call it, unstoppable, with you or without you.”
“Well, I am with you.”
“Yes, indeed you are; there’s an upside and a downside to that too.” He retorted.
“You didn’t even know her. Why she mean so much to you?”
“Well, if this goes well, I’ll get my chance, won’t I? She was only going to tell the truth. No one should die for that.”
“You are a naïve assassin aren’t you? It happens every day … many times a day, actually.”
“She was trying to stop a war … to save her people and my country and your country had her killed.”
“This is not my country. China is an occupied land and ruled my thieves and murderers. If I thought this was my country, I’d be trying to kill you instead of helping you. She did save her people and gave her life for them. There hasn’t been a shot fired.”
“And who will ever know what she did?”
“I’ve lived my whole life without an ounce of recognition for what I have done for freedom.” Ruby said remorsefully.
“Well, I will make sure everyone knows, and that she can tell them herself. She should not have died, and I am responsible, and so are you!”
“You know what we’re doing is not authorized.” Ruby said in an aggressive voice.
“Sure it is.” The operative said equally aggressively.
“What, by who?” Ruby asked defensively.
“By me; that’s who. The moment I learned about what happened to her, and how to save her, the mission was set. Nothing will stop me now except a bullet. Then, I will at least die doing the right thing.”
The plainly dressed man walked casually down Puchang Road and saw all the Asian faces glancing back at him. Some of them were beautiful and wonderful to look at, and some of them smiled at him. Each one brought back how he felt when he had seen her face in the file folder. She was an angel to behold; the recording of what she wanted to tell the world and her voice had left an indelible imprint on his brain, he thought. Everything he had read about her made him more determined to bring her back. If what he was about to do even had a chance of working, he had to try. He said nothing back to Ruby on the other end of the line.
“The right thing? In this business the right thing is what someone higher up tells us is right. You are crazy! Are you there? You’re thinking of her, aren’t you? Get you your mind focused so we can get her back. My god, she’s dead for goodness sakes. It’s all theory anyway. You really willing to die for a theory that probably won’t even work?”
“You said they could be trusted … can they?”
“Yeah, sort of.” Ruby replied stammering.
“Sort of, what’s sort of mean?”
“Well, there is a program, and it’s called Re-Constitution, but …”
“I know all of that already. What’s but mean then? It sounds so political. What is it, a revolutionary movement? And, what do you mean by the word but?”
“Revolutionary, it’s all that, Ruby, and then some, but not the way people think of the word.” Ruby shook her head up and down and did not respond, but she knew that this guy was smart, perhaps more than she thought, and he was in love with a dead woman he had not killed and had never met alive. “Sounds stupid to me.” She said out loud.
“What’s stupid?”
“Oh, just thinking out loud.”
“Ha, you do that all the time, even talk to yourself.”
“Well, you’re no company at all!”
“I’m not supposed to be, right?”
Ruby thought of his words and regretted them. “Um, uh, right. The target operates only at night and has an ETA of 7:45 p.m.”
The operative walked on. He looked to the left on the other side of Puchang Road with the large sign suspended over the natural Chinese bathhouse illuminated the night where the he had discovered he could engage in some carnal pleasures the night before. “Nice place.” He said out loud.
“Shenyang, it’s come a long way from before. But if you are talking about the bathhouse, you catch the clap there if you are not careful.”
“How did you know I … Never mind.”
“Baby, it is what I do. I know everything you do.”
He looked to the right on the same side of the street he was on. Puchang road was filled with people walking like he was and many of them were gathered around the various meat vendors who were enticing the appetites of the Chinese people with the scent of brazed and Barbequed meat on a stick and chicken and many other kinds of meat that sent the smoke into the air. His nostrils expanded and his belly concurred.
Ruby received an encoded message that told her the chopper was in the air and the attack force was already in place in the night market that was above the target location.
The operative pointed his phone at a sign that was attached to the outside wall of a restaurant with pictures of various meat dishes, all of which could nearly get him off stride and force him to sit down and eat.
“Wow, that looks wonderful!”
Ruby laughed. “It’s dog.”
The man looked around to see if a dog was about to attack him. “Dog, I don’t see any…” He understood. “You’ve got to be kidding. That’s all dog meat, and it actually looks ... very delicious, I hate to admit. You guys are animals!” He slightly shouted in disgust.
“No, we just like to eat animals, that’s all, and it’s pretty good too, if you close your eyes and shout down your memories of lassie on TV.”
“You probably all eat bugs and snakes and all those vermin too, bet.”
“No, not as much as before.” Ruby laughed.
The operative took his eyes and the phone off of the restaurant sign and walked on.
“What’s your Asian name, oh yes, what was that, oh Li hi. It suits you perfectly, cause it means tough and you’re one aggressive bitch! I learned that at the institute’s library today.
“Am I losing my touch? When did you get over there and I did not know about it? Yes, I was born to do this, and I do it well.”
“Get over it; we’re here and you are my eyes. And, yes, you are good at lying and deceiving, on that we agree. Anyway, you worry too much.” The operative said as he walked on down Puchang Road.”
“Don’t forget it’s the night market.” Ruby reminded the operative.
“After dogs, bugs and snakes, I don’t want to think about food.”
“Good, because you ain’t going there to eat, baby. Just be careful and look a bit lost and uneasy.”
“How’d you figure out there was something more than food there and the left over products that weren’t sent to Wal-Mart stores in America?”
“Elevators.”
“Elevators, there are no working elevators anywhere, that I have seen.”
“Exactly, there’s not one working one in the whole Institute of Engineering.”
“So…?”
“Then why is there one in the ridiculously dirty night market, and it only goes below ground?”
“You are truly good at what you do, Ruby Zhang.”
“You make me uneasy when you start complimenting me like that.”
“Yes, makes me wonder if I am losing my edge. It doesn’t happen very often, but I am uneasy, of course. I’m talking with you, aren’t I? Anyway, I can live through anything, yesterday proved that to me.”
“There, that’s my killer!”
“Hell, Ruby, you were right there with me yesterday on the bus coming back to that rat hole at the institute they call an apartment? It was so crowded and smelly that it even made a hard assed woman like you almost sick. Dog meat and bugs for breakfast doesn’t bother you but a bus right made you act almost like a woman.”
“That was mean.” Ruby said with a sound in her voice.
“Wow, you have feelings?”
She replied. “Anyway, China’s not the first country you’ve have had such an experience in.”
“You’ve got that right, even in LA smells like a dump.” He zigzagged up the road to avoid the mass of Chinese people who were friendly but had no problem running right into him as they struggled to get where they were going. It was survival and their way of avoiding standing still in the midst of the maddening crowd. “I did love the cultural feelings and it made my international traveler's blood start flowing well! It is your country.”
“This is not my country, as I said before. This is my people, but I can never accept the thugs and killers in control here. They are usurpers. So, I help the Taiwanese and will support China when she is truly free, probably not in my lifetime. And that bus was pretty smelly and made my bowels feel that way too. For now, get your killer instincts going. You can travel again after this, if you’re still alive.” Ruby added.
The operative walked up to the entrance of the night market and stood outside for a moment and let a cigarette. “You’re more American than Chinese now, Ruby my … dear. I couldn’t even scratch my nose on that rolling toilet, but I still managed to snap some cool pictures to put on Facebook, if it worked in this retched place! Did you see them? Every time the bus stopped, the money-mongering driver let more in that shaky bus that was already packed like a can of sardines. Then, he’d shout for us to move to the back of the bus, but there was nowhere to go.”
“The force is in place and are about to get everything ready for when the target arrives.”
You mean they will kill the regulars, don’t you?”
“We’ll we’re not taking candy from a baby. Someone has to die to save her, even though she’s already dead.” Ruby said with emotion in her voice.”So, did you forget I was with you on that bus?” Ruby said.
“Yeah, you were right there next to me with your hand covering your mouth to stop from puking. The good news is that we made it home alive. And, I will tonight as well, for her. I am not your average Tourist!”
“Let’s see if you are alive to tell me that again, in a couple of hours.”
“When has that ever been guaranteed?”
Shenyang, The People’s Republic of China
Tuesday, March 17, 2013, 6:56 p.m.
“Everything’s ready, we have our people in place and they’re guarding the animal farm now.” Ruby Zhang informed the operative.
“OK, I am outside the …”
“The night market, yes I know.” Ruby interrupted.
“Yes, yes of course you do. Why’d you hate the Maoist regime here? You are just like one of them … no better than them at watching other people’s business?”
“Baby, you are my business and besides, officially, I am your wife, remember?”
“Oh my goodness; the things I do for my country!”
“You got that from a movie! Anyway, you need to wrap up the package and Sam Wells will gather the info we need.”
“What? Sam Wells is here? You never told me he was going to be involved. Look, Sam is a brainiack for sure, but certainly not into espionage and … where is he?”
A male voice sounded out behind the operative and someone tapped him on the shoulder. “Where do you want him to be Blogger?” a voice the operative recognized immediately.
“Sam?” The operative turned around. “Sam what the hell are you doing here?”
“Oh, well, now there’s a question that even I cannot answer completely. As a believer in Jesus Christ, I am here to serve and though I confess that I fail miserably, I think that life is about …”
“OK, OK I forgot who I was talking to and haven’t seen for a while.”
“Nathan Hawk, how the hell are you? I haven’t seen you since … well, it looks like you pulled through OK.”
“Pulled through what? I don’t know what you’re talking about. But, most of the time I can’t interpret a word you’re saying anyway.”
“Ah, yes, um, isn’t this place amazing? Look at the throng of people. It’s my first time in China, and the food is good. I have this pen I made and I just wave it over the food before I eat it and it counts the billions of microbes and whether they are good or bad. Most of them are killers, but I just eat it anyway, because it’s so good.” Sam Wells kept speaking in gibberish as his head was moving around looking for something or someone. “I need coffee, I have not had a decent cup of coffee in this massive teahouse since I arrived. Even McDonald’s coffee seems …”
Nathan Hawk looked at him and shook his head. “Coffee’s the last thing you need!” He wondered how they’d ever get out alive with Sam Wells attached to him, let alone bring the infatuation of his heart back to life. He looked at the bobbing head that housed the 210 IQ brains of Sam Wells. “You have not changed at all Sam, and it’s been, what, ten years and you’re still nuts.”
“Change, oh we all change.” He took off his cap. “Look, remember the Einstein hair, well, more like Jessie Ventura now! And, I have grown a lot older, and so have you, by the way. Change is inevitable because of the deterioration of the molecular structure of the …” Sam’s eyes locked onto someone walking towards the night market entrance and started walking toward him.”
“The package is to your right.” Ruby told Hawk. “And I see Sam spotted him before I did.”
“Are you surprised? He noticing everything before the rest of us, and he’s walking over to the man. Is that protocol?” Hawk asked.
“Protocol, haha, that’s Sam Wells.”
“Yes, I forgot, no sense writing protocol. He’d just alter it.” Hawk said.
“Sam! Sam, what are you doing; gonna ask him where to get a decent cup of coffee?”
“Oh coffee, no I have already figured that out. It’s back around the corner from my apartment in Chicago.” He kept walking toward the target.
“Sam, I know you’re smart, but …”
“Thank you. It has been commonly thought that if you think someone is smart then you probably are too.” Nathan Hawk just shook his head in the cold night air with people rushing past him on all sides.
“Look Blogger, do you recall the teacher we had the institute in Chicago who taught us about missions and all that stuff back when we dreamed of spreading the word of god to the ends of the earth. Well, I remember he said that to get into the culture it was important to blend in and to do what the others do. You know how these hoodlums run right into you? Watch this.” Sam, now several feet away from Hawk, shouted back.
Sam Wells walked faster at the same pace as everyone else trying to make it through the narrow walkway that was lined with every kind of vendor the mind could think of. He saw the target had a cup of something warm in his hand with a lot of papers in a plastic bag to look unofficial.
Sam walked up to him and ran right into him almost knocking him down and spilling the hot liquid on his coat. Sam smelled it. Coffee? Sam told himself and caught the man’s as he was falling and simultaneously attached a small microchip to the to the man’s coat pocket.
“Saabi!” The man said, using one of the Chinese languages worst words. The man straightened his coat and looked at Sam Wells with a look of having seen his face somewhere before. He couldn’t recall but knew he was not Asian.
“Are you stupid?” He looked at his plastic bag. The coffee had drenched all the papers in the bag. “Do you know what you have done? That was three night’s work, you imbecile!”
Sam looked at the man and placed his hand in his own coat pocket and flipped a switch on a remote device and felt it vibrate two times. He knew it was working.
“Oh, please forgive me. I was trying to blend in and act like the rest of the imbeciles here.”
The man took out the papers and turned the coffee soaked bag inside out and put them back in. He turned and walked on cursing under his breath and shaking his head.
“Excuse me!” Sam Wells shouted to the man. He turned around and looked back at Sam with a disgusted look spread across his face.
“What? I am a very busy man.” He said with a thick Chinese accent.
“Do you know where I can get a decent cup of coffee?” Sam asked and Hawk laughed out loud when he heard it and so did Ruby. The man walked on and Sam walked back over to Nathan Hawk.
“Where’d you place the device?” Hawk asked Sam.
“How did you know I …”
“I know you, and that was perfect for you, since I know you are great at the indelicacies of life.”
“You are mean sometimes, Blogger.”
“Why do you keep on calling me blogger? Is that my code name or something?”
“Yeah … something. At any rate, his pocket.”
“His pocket; I placed it in his pocket.”
“Oh, OK, now we can track him. Let’s go.”
“No, not yet, let’s wait a bit.” Sam said calmly. “Damn that coffee smelled good!”
“Why are we wasting time? He’s right there and…”
“And, he will gather the information we need to get into the center. We already know where that is. The chip does not just tack. In fact, that’s the most simple thing it does. It is absorbent software.” Sam looked at Nathan Hawk and smiled.
“I know you’re enjoying keeping me wondering and being a step ahead of me, but that’s OK. I have a hard time hanging out in your world. Anyway, it’s as cold as Antarctica out here.”
“Oh, not really Antarctica is at least twenty degrees colder than here. In fact we’d be dead in these clothes if we were…”
“Right, Sam, you are always right.”
“Well, not always; sometimes I am…”
“Right again.” Hawk patiently said. “Now, let me into your chamber of horrors that is your mind so I can get the hell scared out of me.”
“Sam looked a little sad at the words and shook it off. “The chip absorbs all codes and electrical and digitals signals. So, once he gets to the door and pressed the code to enter, I’ll have it on my controller and then when he logs into his computer, every single file will be copied and we’ll have that too. So, though even I know we can just gallivant off to get that coffee; do you think we could? It would only take a moment and it smelled so…”
“Sam! Focus!”
“Ah, yes, Let’s let him do some of the work for us so we can wrap him up and don’t have to spend dangerous time getting all that ourselves.”
“Well, Sam, that’s brilliant!”
“Hawk, you complimented me. That’s a first.”
“Well, don’t tell anyone.”
“Too late, Hawk.” Ruby interjected. “I heard that.” She said smiling broadly.
“OK, but, I meant anyone important.” Hawk looked at his phone’s screen and Ruby grimaced.
“So…?” Hawk said looking right at Sam Wells.
“Yeah, so what?” Sam asked in a relaxed tone.
“Sam, you worry me when you’re so relaxed. It’s not like you at all. Shouldn’t we follow him?”
“Why?”
“Why? Because he’s the target and the reason I’m languishing in Chinatown; that’s why.”
“Hawk, chill! I wanted to use that term for the longest time. I heard it on TV. I’ve been watching the tube more than before. A lot of good stuff on the…”
“Sam, I know you hang out somewhere beyond lala-land, but you have to focus.”
“Have you noticed blogger that when I am nervous you tell me to relax and when I relax you get nervous?”
“Well … I … OK, you have a point there, but don’t we have to bag this guy?”
“I love this!” Ruby said laughing. “LMAO!” She typed on Hawk’s screen.
“Facebook’s not allowed in Maoville, Ruby.” Hawk said with an upset tone. “You guys got me hanging out to dry here.”
“Hawk, if you have to catch a snake, would you rather put it in the bag or have the snake crawl right up inside the back by itself?”
“OK, I’m listening.” Hawk said.
“Like I said early, this software in that little device I attached to the Charlie Chan’s coat is absorbent. It will lock onto any code it senses and automatically copy it. So, by the time he gets to his computer station, I’ll have every code he does and then some. He’s got to walk past the lights and the elevator and the …”
“OK, I got it, we can just about walk right in there, right?”
“You got it, Sherlock!” Sam quipped.
“Sam can just activate what we want on and turn off what we want off by just pointing his controller at it. It will find the saved signal and it is ours, right, Sam?”
“Right, if it works.”
“What? You mean you haven’t even tested it?

“Yeah, I tested it, and it worked three out of five times.”
Hawk shook his head and he was suddenly scared. “What’d you do, build it last night?”
“What, you think I am stupid, don’t you?”
Hawk looked at Sam inquisitively. “You did didn’t you? You build this thing last night.”
“No, I did not build it last night.”
“OK good, I was afraid you ad and was unsure if its built it last night.”
“This morning.”
“What?”
“I designed it and built it this morning, but it was easy, and I know it will be fine.”
“Why don’t I feel better, Ruby?” Hawk said into his phone.

America - Who We Are - Where We‘re From - Where We’re Headed

America
Who We Are - Where We‘re From - Where We’re Headed
Recently, I was teaching a lesson in my American Culture course here in Shenyang, China about what makes America stand together as a truly united nation. I pointed out that China has more than 10,000 years of history on which to lean on in times of hardship, loss and tyranny. I pointed out that the Chinese culture has endured both good and very bad emperors, the Cultural Revolution, Mao and has stayed together as a people over ten centuries and is still strong and united.

Then, I asked them what they felt held The United States together as a nation. We have less than three hundred years to claim as a nation. We do not have the longevity to act as a bulwark in times of disaster and calamity as the Chinese people have. In fact, I pointed out that the one thing that holds the most power country in the history of humankind together is one piece of old parchment called the United States Constitution. If we should lose our resolve and allow that precious document to be shredded and disregarded as the supreme law of the land, the United States would cease to exist as a free and independent nation. My conversation during my class made me think deeply about the march toward freedom that took America from a fledgling young group of colonies to the freest and most cherished nation on the face of the earth. Those reflections led me to some important points of what I wrote below. As you read it, I hope it will help you renew your appreciation of who we are, where we came from and where we are headed.

Since the discovery of the new world, which was transformed into the most powerful and freest place to live and breathe in the history of the world, the flood of people who have left their homes of their birth and ventured to America has never ceased. Throughout the years, first predominantly from Europe and today from every corner of the globe, these new-world visionaries have sought to come to the United States in search of a better life, a freer existence with a hope for the opportunity of living a better more prosperous life through hard work and fair treatment.

When the descendents of those who landed in the wilderness of the new world had forged a life and discovered their own new identity as Americans, it was time to build a new nation of freedom. They threw off the shackles of those who had abused their labor and Thomas Jefferson wrote that it was clear and went without saying that all men and women were all born with the same opportunity to live free and to become what they wished and who they dreamed to be.

Thomas Jefferson laid out his ideals for humanity and a nation of liberty so clearly because he knew that the rights of all men and women were not granted by those who had the rule over them. He inscribed that the rights to a good and meaningful life, the natural ability to live and work and practice one’s faith of choice in liberty or to practice no faith at all and the all-consuming need to find happiness one’s life was God-breathed drive inside the human soul and granted by no man and could not morally be removed by tyrants either.

Jefferson and the forefathers of the United States of America did not want to set up a nation that was controlled by men but, in fact, to lay down the principles of a government that would preserve, protect and defend the freedom that lived and breathed inside the souls of all be people from their creator. Therefore, as the a new nation was conceived, they intended to ensure that no group, no person, no sort of radical thought could ever enslave the American people as the colonies former task masters had attempted to do. They insisted that though men and women may not complete the course of their lives on an equal footing, due to the decisions individuals make during their lives, they were all born with the same possibility of success and achievement and the same ability to accomplish and live their dreams.

There are many powerful truths that have been taught to our children down through the years since America became a united nation. Yet, there can be found no more powerful truth that has brought Americans together and bound us throughout the history of the young and vibrant nation, from the victory over tyranny in the US revolution and the ratification of the US Constitution, than the enduring belief in the freedom of the individual.

Individual freedom is one of the deepest and most important truths found in the US constitution and in the minds of Americans. The freedom of the individual is one of the most basic and important values in the American Republic. Nevertheless, this beautiful truth and a wonderful idea has also proven to be sometimes difficult to maintain and has even forced Americans to take up arms to fight for their right of living as a free people against evil adversaries who would enslave us, and who hated freedom.

The concept and abiding principle of individual freedom that drives Americans in almost everything we do was born out of what I call the pioneer spirit. This idea of coming to a wild and rugged land that cost the lives of many, before and after they arrived at America’s shores, was forced upon those who first ventured forth from the lands of their birth to forge a new life in a new world. It developed into what Americans have always called learning to stand on our own two feet. The difficult circumstances of building a settlement and planting crops in soil that nothing seemed to grow in caused those who survived and became our ancestors to develop a true independent pioneer outlook that said, “I have to depend on myself or I will die.”

That same spirit is woven into the very fabric of the nation today, and it is what challenged our nation’s forefathers, as they wrote the nation’s constitution, the longest enduring and shortest, most direct declaration of individual freedom to ever be written and become a nation’s supreme law. It has been said that individual freedom is so powerful in America that we have developed an ‘I’ culture. That is not to say that we are egotistical or selfish. In fact, America has been the most generous of nations through the history of humankind. It means that though we are unified and have stood together through trials of all kinds, some of which were dire moments of life and death, Americans have typically known that we are responsible for ourselves and for our futures and fortunes. The history of the nation and the people before the nation was unified has taught us to be watchful over our futures, to take risk and to be responsible for our decisions whether they be good or disastrous ones.

Probably the most amazing thing of all is the brilliance of the nation’s forefathers in drafting the nation’s constitution. The main catalyst that drove rich and poor alike to mount ships and to sail across treacherous waters was the need to escape from a system of feudal lords, aristocracy and a system of nobility that controlled how they worshipped, what they could say and what they could buy. The leaders of the nation who wrote the constitution and the nation’s first citizens who ratified it into power insisted that there be strong and enduing protections for the very inalienable rights for which so many gave their lives in the American revolution.

Because of our insistence on living with individual freedom, the nation demanded that safeguards be added in the first ten amendments to the constitution call the Bill of rights with such unwavering statements that would guarantee freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion and from religion, the right of self defense in the form of bearing arms as one deemed necessary, and the right to protest what we feel is wrong and unconstitutional and to demand redress. It was believed and proven true that only such protections that limited the government’s power, prevented religious arrogance and authority and the absence of dictatorial nobility would guarantee equal protection, equal opportunity and competition under a fair democratic system of laws and not of men.

In America, as she was conceived and originally envisioned, the principle that everyone should have the chance to succeed or to fail has generated the greatest advancement in lifestyle, technology and healthcare than at any time in history. The unshakable ideal was voiced by President John F. Kennedy himself when he challenged Americans and the world to not be like those poor retched one who know neither victory nor defeat. Though being born in America does not ensure that one will finish their lives a success and with the life they sought, but it does grant to each the absolute chance to live their dreams successfully, depending on one’s decisions and choices made in their pursuit of happiness.

Once again, it was the life of the system of aristocracy of Europe and elsewhere, which drove our ancestors to voyage far and from every corner of the globe. In their homelands, they were virtually locked into their social level of life, which meant that a baker’s son became a baker and a king’s son became a king. Few were they who were able to break free from the fateful chains of the old country’s aristocracy. Then there was the new world, and by setting sail and landing on unknown soil, the chances of living the life one wanted, of being who one wanted to become suddenly were much more achievable, and dying in the process was a better way to live than to be enslaved into a life that was a fate worse than death.
Though arriving in the new world was a challenge, though declaring the thirteen colonies independence was a virtual suicide mission and though building a lasting system of government were all nearly impossible hopes, the nation forged ahead and it has created the greatest nation on the face of the earth and has raised the standard of living and the chance to have a longer, healthier and happier life than at any period in human history.

None of the success and power that The United States has developed since her conception has been by accident or by magic. It has been, simply put, by hard and strenuous work, dedication, consecration and patriotic fervor. The American work ethic has never been second to any other people, and the United States is responsible for some of the world’s greatest breakthroughs, including being the only nation to put men on the moon. It has been by the desire to maintain our individual right of freedom, by our insistence upon living in a nation filled with equality of opportunity and our hard and endless quest for a better and prosperous life of significance that America remains today still the greatest hope for the rest of the world.

Today, as the American people look for a more prosperous and patriotic future, it is imperative that we recognize some very powerful challenges, even grave and building dangers to our nation’s enduring greatness. Perhaps the greatest danger facing America is not from outside our borders at all. In fact, it is inside the halls of what was to be a limited and service oriented government that has become a giant monolith of power and over-reaching power, where dangerous events are even now unfolding to dismantle all we and our ancestors struggled earnestly to build. The US Government has grown by leaps and bounds in its reach into the private lives of the people it is duly sworn to protect and defend.

The US Government today has passed laws that control the way we eat, travel, communicate and gather. That which was to be a weak and limited power base now holds sway over its people in ways that are strictly forbidden in the nation’s constitution. This uncontrollable growth in government intrusion into the people individual freedom threatens to tear the heart out of the nation’s core principles and shall, if left unchecked, render the United States of America unrecognizable and in no way resembling the original intent of the forefathers and the nation set up by the US Constitution.

The government’s penchant for huge deficits has placed the nation in grave danger and indeed more dangerous to our continued existence as a nation than any war the nation has ever fought. It seems self evident that because of the nation’s loss of its work ethic of hard work and our current love of government dependence, because of our nation’s acceptance of immoral practices of abortion and the creeping menace of gay marriage and our basic loss of our religious heritage, we have plunged the greatest nation on earth onto the road to poverty and government tyranny.

We have chosen a false sense of security through the passage of unconstitutional laws. Such breaches with the prescriptions of the supreme law of the land as the patriot act and other national emergency acts make it now not only easy to foresee grave threats to liberty in America but even highly likely that the nation’s freedom will be lost unless we, as a nation, return to the constitution.

America must reign in this unconstitutional government’s long aggressive unlawful reach into the pocketbooks, homes, weapon cabinets, workplaces and places of worship of our nation people. Let us regain our footing and again insist that we stand on our own two feet. Let us demand that we be heard and listened to and take back our nation by working hard to build a nation that is based on Individual liberty, fair and equal opportunity and rediscover the value of hard work and an insistence on living in the freest nation on earth and the last best hope for mankind.

The Consortium Book Cover - A Powerful Depiction of How the Mighty Are falling

I thought that a bit of introduction and interpretation of what the book cover photo says to me might be in order. It is like I could see it all out in front of me, and there were simply hidden puzzle pieces that made this amazing cover come to life. It tells so much of what I fear for the future of America and the world at large.

The art work in this cover represents a lot of time painting and trying to write a novel in images. As you look inside the crystal ball, you can get a feeling of what the cover says about my most powerful story ever, The Consortium.

One Nation Under Tyranny

The painting, 'One nation Under Tyranny' is a painting I did in grief over the murder of our American sister, Terri Schiavo by the evil hands and intent of the United States Government, which is sworn to protect all of its people, and which has no authority to end anyone’s life or liberty who has also not committed a crime deserving of such punishment. Terri Schiavo was a common American woman who loved her life, wanted a good future and who was sadly stricken with a youthful heart attack that cause her brain damage, but as far as I know in the United States of America, illness is not a crime.

Terri Shiavo was determined to be brain dead even though she could follow her visitors with eye contact, smiled when they came and cried when they left. She was on no life supports at all and was only fed with a feeding tube. She was said to have no feeling, but this woman was very much alive. Her only requirements for life were nursing care and food and water. Though over four million dollars was raised for her rehabilitation, not one penny was ever spent to try to increase her quality of life. In fact, her ex-husband, who had already remarried and has children by his second wife, received every penny of those donated funds, which he never used for Terri, the moment she died.

Terri Schiavo was murdered by the US Government to get her off what they considered to be a waste of funds for one of its own constituents the
members of this corrupt government who were elected to serve, protect and defend.

On March 31, 2005, Terri Schiavo died after 14 days of agony, having all her nutrition and hydration denied to her and she died of starvation and thirst after being tortured to death by the system that said her survival simply wasn’t worth the cost.
At that whole moment in our history, when the government killed our American sister, the whole notion that Americans were living in a nation with a government of the people, for the people and by the people died and every member of the government had the nation's blood on their hands.

This tyrannical body of worthless politicians no longer had a right to govern. The rabble ruling the roost in America didn't care about helping a free people. That was the moment I believe that we ordered God to take his guiding hand off of America and when God granted this nation their request of living in a nation devoid of God’s law and His steady loving and guiding hands over our nation.

I was so upset about losing the battle to save Terri Schiavo’s life and I had the image you can see inside the crystal ball on the Consortium book cover shining so brightly I could see it just hanging out in front of my mind so clearly. So, I simply painted what I saw it all in my mind. The Eagle is completely shaded and sanded in pencil and took me four weeks to complete. I wanted to depict what I call a Dictocracy that has the semblance and the speech of a free nation but which, in reality, is a nation controlled by those we entrusted to keep us free.

The day Ms. Schiavo died, the legitimacy of the the American Republic died forever and without God’s blessing over our nation, we replaced what was enshrined in the co
nstitution with a system that no longer seeks to protect its people’s rights of assembly, free speech, freedom of Religion to allow everyone to worship as they choose, or choose not have a faith is choice of all. That is freedom and it has been assaulted by the government whose sole purpose for existing was to protect it equally stabbed liberty, the nation in the heart and freedom is gone.

The end of freedom to speak and practice our freedom is depicted in the president’s dagger shoved through the left wing of the eagle. You can see the olive branches in the dagger and a broken arrow. That is a representation of the fact that such evil leadership that seeks to enslave our nation has broken the back of the powerful force that the US Presidency had always been as based on freedom. The Current president is totally distrusted and rejected by many because he can no longer rules constitutionally but only through tyranny.

The nation’s inability to trust any longer in the goodness and righteousness of our laws was depicted by the Congress pinning the eagle’s right wing to the constitution that is stained with the blood of the death of the American Republic by passing and enforcing laws they have never read and which they know are unconstitutional.
ally, I showed in the image that it was finally the Supreme Court who slaughtered the free beast through ruling such as Roe v Wade and the ruling that outlawed God and prayer in our schools. It is the highest court in the land who has finally dealt the fatal blow to the soaring eagle that WAS America.

The slaughtered eagle depicts what life will be with an all-powerful government when that government can stoop to national murder. All in pencil, it represents
all that we have all loved and enjoyed coming to an end. God can really use us if we let our hearts learn to feel how God did when we, America turned our backs on our protector, by taking our nation out of the hands of a good and loving and faithful God and telling Him we no longer need him. God has simply exceeded to our request to remove His control over us by taking our nation out of the hands of a good and loving and faithful God and telling Him we no longer want him.
Look at the result of losing the righteous judgment of God. In California, on any given day, you can see up to one hundred police officers who have become ominous figures in our social lives. Yet, I have lived in Communist nation of China for almost three years now and I have seen a total of five police officers on the streets. How can we call ourselves free and independent people when, because we have abandoned the faith of our fathers, we can no longer maintain a civil society without a police force that is as militant as our brave fighting men and women who wage war abroad for the nation’s security?

President Barack Hussein Obama said himself that America is no longer a Christian nation. Because of that new paradigm that is devoid of anything resembling the Judeo-Christian ethic, we can kill 45 million babies even if God says we can’t. God said that a man should cleave to his woman and that the Woman should cleave to her man.

We know that it is the will of God, even with all the difficulties relationships have, man was made for a woman, and woman was made for a man; that is the will of our Master, and we said we didn’t care and went about to corrupt the intended will of a Holy God. We have failed to turn back to the will of God, we have turned our backs on His will, and He has turned his face against America, just like He has done to nations who turned against his long history of blessings he had afforded them.

It is only self evident to say that a nation without the guiding hand of God lacks compassion and wise judgment and safety. It turns itself into a heartless system of living without real life, devoid of mercy and selfish. America has become a nation of angry people who no longer seem worthy nor able to bear the title of the “United” States of America. As in China, where I currently am residing and working, if American buses were so full you could not scratch your nose, it would get dangerous and even a fatal situation.

Here, I find these people so patient and helpful to each other, because the Chinese people still love each other and are proud of who they are. I do not think China is becoming free because of the leaders they have either. Yet, because of their patriotism to their posterity and their traditions, the Chinese people have remained as a great people in spite of the evil they have endured.

Americans have lost that sense of pride and patriotic fervor because we have taken our eyes off of the one who made it all succeed. We have come from being proud of our nation, from a nation of heroes and great warriors, men and women of stunning great valor to become a nation that no longer cleaves to the God who gave America the power and the glory. Today, God is just letting America destroy itself until she finally cries out to God again, father forgive us; we know not what we do. Will we do so? That is not yet known.

An America without God-given rights is no America at all, would you not agree? The book cover portrays the end of the nation of greatness and it makes me think of King Saul in the Bible. He had been told not to go to battle and told God he did not care and by the end of the battle, he needed help from his men to fall upon his own sword. He too said no, in the face of his knowledge the will of God said, “I don’t care,” and he was a failure. America, no less, shall face the same result shortly unless the nation seek God’s forgiveness and his grace, and find a new respect for life. Though King Saul had sought to kill a young King David repeated, when he heard of the death of his adversary, David cried out, “Oh, how the mighty have fallen!” Is that what will be said of the United States of America as well?

I have just started teaching an American Culture course at my university here in China. I offered a challenging question to my students. I went did a little overview of Chinese history, which is, by the way, over ten thousand years old. I told them, their people have gone through emperors such as the Ming and the Qing dynasties and successive wars, which left them often in the hands of rulers who had brutally abused them. They had been through Mao, and the Communist revolution and good and bad leaders up to this very day. Yet, the Chinese people have lasted, endured blow after blow, tragedy after tragedy and even massive disasters. They have held together because of an enduring history and culture and dedication to the fact that they are Chinese. Their culture has outlived every single tyrant that has harmed their lives and their progress.
Then, I asked them, “What holds the American Republic together?” America, as a nation, has a history of less than three hundred years. We have no language in our name and we are a people gathered out of every kindred, tribe and nation. What does an American look like? We look like Europe, Africa, Asia, anyone. My students looked so deeply at me as I sought to get them to tell me what keeps a nation like America together in times of trial and crisis. We are mixed in every way and a salad bowel of every kind of person, thought, religion, food and ideal imaginable.

Finally, what I told them next amazed them, and I could see literal shock on their faces. I looked them and held up a copy of the United States Constitution. I asked them, “Have you ever considered that this great people who conquered the Nazis, the Soviets, conquered space and went to the moon and this great people who has managed to transform itself generation after generation is in reality the most fragile nation on Earth. For, we are not held together by the quantity of our years of history. We do not even have a language named after us. We are a nation held together by this tattered old piece of parchment, which if shredded, would cause the nation we say we love to cease to exist in the form by which she has always been known.
The Consortium is a book about a nation that lost its way so badly that when pushed into a corner from which there was no escape, the silent enemies who feed our financial appetites finally cashed in all their chips and let the American house fall like a house of cards. I know it will not make people sit and think, “Oh, that was a fun read.” Instead, and I hope it will cause readers to sit back and wonder about where they are being led to and about the future of the nation that has historically granted its people more safety and freedom than anywhere in the world in any place and in any time.

The presentation on American culture I gave my students gave them great pause. Does it have the same effect on you? It should have, and if it does not, you are not taking your nation’s wellbeing seriously enough. Those who would come and tinker with the supreme law of the land risk to cause this land to no longer resemble the America we have loved and cherished.

Ask yourself, before you vote, who will preserve this beacon of hope to the world for your children and their children, after you are gone? Then, you will certainly choose between those who love the America we have loved and that has loved us and those who seek to fundamentally transform her into a nation of cutthroat Politicians who wish us only control and woe. That is the choice before us now. Will you take it and react to it as seriously as my students did? It’s up to you. - Author Steven Clark Bradley
